Anseba

Anseba is one of the administrative regions (zobas) of Eritrea. Located in the central-northern part of the country, it is named after the Anseba River, which flows through the region. Its capital and largest city is Keren, a historical commercial center in the Eritrean highlands.

Geography and climate: The region features highland plateaus and river valleys, with a climate that varies from cool mountainous areas to warmer lower valleys. The Anseba River and its tributaries are the region’s main hydrological features, supporting local agriculture in favorable seasons.

Demographics and culture: The population is predominantly composed of Eritrean ethnic groups whose common language is Tigrinya, with communities speaking other local languages. The region includes religious and cultural institutions typical of Eritrea, including churches and mosques.

Administration: Anseba is one of Eritrea’s six regional states established after independence. It is subdivided into woredas (districts) and includes urban centers such as Keren along with smaller towns in the highlands.

Economy and infrastructure: Agriculture is the main economic activity, with crops such as cereals, pulses, and sesame, along with livestock herding. Irrigation projects along the Anseba River support farming in valley areas. The region has road connections to other parts of the country and hosts local markets and small-scale commerce, with ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and public services.

History: The area has historic settlements and played a role during Eritrea’s struggle for independence, influencing settlement patterns and development. Since independence, development initiatives have focused on infrastructure, services, and resilience to drought and resource management.
