Eritreas

Eritreas is not a standard geographical term. In most contexts, the correct reference is Eritrea, a country in the Horn of Africa. The form Eritreas may appear as a misspelling or informal plural, but it does not denote a separate state or recognized region.

Eritrea is bordered by Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the south, and the Red Sea to the east. Its capital and largest city is Asmara. The country declared independence from Ethiopia in 1991 and became a fully sovereign state in 1993 after a UN-supervised referendum. It is governed as a one-party state led by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice, with President Isaias Afwerki in office since independence; national elections have not been held since 1993.

Geography ranges from coastal plains along the Red Sea to highlands in the interior. The climate is hot and arid in the lowlands and cooler in the highlands. The population is composed mainly of ethnic groups such as Tigrinya and Tigre, with languages including Tigrinya, Arabic, and Tigre; Tigrinya is widely used in education and administration. The economy is diversified by subsistence agriculture, mining (notably gold), and remittances from abroad, but it remains limited by infrastructure gaps and past regional tensions. The currency is the nakfa (ERN).

Religious composition includes Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Islam, and smaller Christian communities. Eritrea has faced international scrutiny over human rights and civil liberties, as well as national service policies.
