Process annealing, also known as subcritical annealing, is used for low-carbon steels and involves heating the material to a temperature below its lower critical point, followed by cooling. This method is effective in softening the material for cold working without causing significant changes in its microstructure.

In some cases, spheroidizing is employed, where the material is heated and cooled in a way that causes the carbides to form into spherical shapes. This is particularly useful for high-carbon steels, making them softer and easier to machine. Stress relief annealing is a low-temperature process that aims to reduce internal stresses caused by prior operations like welding, casting, or cold working. This prevents distortion or cracking. The specific temperatures, holding times, and cooling rates are crucial parameters that determine the outcome of the annealing process and are dictated by the material's composition and desired properties.
