Ankylosed

Ankylosed refers to a condition where bones fuse together, resulting in a loss of mobility. This fusion can occur in various parts of the body, most commonly in joints. Ankylosis is a natural process that can occur as a result of injury, inflammation, or disease. It can also be a congenital condition, meaning a person is born with it.

The most well-known condition associated with ankylosis is ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine. In this condition, the vertebrae in the spine can fuse together, leading to stiffness and pain. Ankylosis can also affect other joints, such as the hips, shoulders, and knees.

When ankylosis occurs in a joint, it can significantly limit the range of motion. This can impact a person's ability to perform everyday activities. The degree of immobility depends on which joint is affected and the extent of the fusion.

The causes of ankylosis are diverse. Trauma, such as a fracture that crosses a joint, can lead to bone fusion as part of the healing process. Chronic inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis can also cause ankylosis over time. Infections within a joint can also trigger this process. In some cases, prolonged immobilization of a joint, such as from wearing a cast for an extended period, might contribute to ankylosis.

Treatment for ankylosis aims to manage pain and maintain as much function as possible. This may involve physical therapy, medication to reduce inflammation, and sometimes surgical interventions to improve mobility or relieve pain.
