Anizotropní refers to a property of materials or phenomena that exhibit different physical properties when measured along different directions. This directional dependence contrasts with isotropic properties, where properties are uniform regardless of the direction of measurement.

In the context of materials science, anizotropy can manifest in various ways, including mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, and optical behavior. For instance, many crystalline materials are anizotropic due to their ordered atomic structure. Wood is a common example of an anizotropic material; it is much stronger and stiffer when loads are applied along the grain compared to across it. Similarly, composite materials, like carbon fiber reinforced polymers, are often designed to be anizotropic to optimize performance in specific directions.

Optical anizotropy is observed in materials that affect light differently depending on its polarization and direction of propagation. Liquid crystals, used in displays, are a prime example of optically anizotropic materials. Their molecules can be aligned in specific directions, allowing control over light transmission.

The phenomenon of anizotropy is crucial in many fields, including engineering, physics, and geology. Understanding and exploiting anizotropy allows for the design of advanced materials and the interpretation of complex physical processes. Conversely, the absence of anizotropy, known as isotropy, simplifies many physical calculations and descriptions.
