Anizotropik

Anizotropik is a term used to describe systems or materials whose properties depend on direction. In other words, anizotropik means that a measured quantity varies when observed along different axes. The concept is the counterpart of isotropy, where properties are the same in all directions. The term is commonly used in physics, materials science, and engineering, and is often expressed mathematically with tensors rather than simple scalars.

In anizotropik materials, directional dependence arises from internal structure, such as crystal lattices, fibers, or layered compositions. This contrasts with isotropic materials, where properties are uniform regardless of orientation. For many practical descriptions, the directional variation is captured by properties that form tensors, meaning they change with orientation and coordinate system.

Examples of anizotropik phenomena appear across disciplines. In crystallography, refractive indices or stiffness differ along distinct crystallographic directions. Optical anisotropy leads to birefringence, where light splits into differently polarized components. In geology, seismic velocities and elastic moduli vary with rock layering and fabric. In biology, diffusion or electrical conductivity can be greater along muscle fibers or neural tracts. Magnetic materials may exhibit preferred directions of magnetization, known as magnetic anisotropy. Engineering applications include composites and liquid crystals, where controlled anisotropy tunes strength, stiffness, or optical response.
