Anisotropism

Anisotropism refers to the property of a material or phenomenon that exhibits different physical properties in different directions. This directional dependence is in contrast to isotropy, where properties are the same regardless of the direction of measurement. Many natural and synthetic materials display anisotropism. For example, wood is anisotropic because its strength and stiffness vary along its grain compared to across it. Crystals are another common example; their optical, electrical, and mechanical properties can differ depending on the crystallographic axis. Light passing through an anisotropic material, such as calcite, can be split into two rays with different polarizations and speeds. In physics, anisotropism can arise from the underlying structure of matter, such as the arrangement of atoms in a crystal lattice, or from external influences like applied fields. The study of anisotropism is important in fields such as materials science, solid-state physics, and optics, as understanding these directional variations is crucial for predicting and controlling material behavior and designing devices.
