Angstigambivalent is a term used in Dutch-language psychology to describe a pattern in which a person experiences concurrent feelings of anxiety and ambivalence toward a person, situation, or self. The term is primarily descriptive rather than a formal diagnostic category in major manuals such as the DSM-5 or ICD-11. It is often used to capture a specific interpersonal dynamic rather than a standalone disorder.

In relationships, angstigambivalent dynamics can involve a strong fear of rejection and abandonment combined with persistent uncertainty about others’ intentions. This can lead to alternating approaches toward closeness and distance, frequent reassurance-seeking, and moments of withdrawal or suspicion. The concept is closely related to anxious-ambivalent attachment, which in attachment theory describes patterns formed by early caregiving that are then carried into adult relationships.

Common features include excessive need for reassurance, hypersensitivity to perceived threats, rumination, mood variability, and difficulties trusting others. These patterns can appear in romantic partnerships, parent-child interactions, and workplace relationships, contributing to relational instability or tension.

Causes are often linked to early experiences of inconsistent caregiving, which can foster insecure attachment and heightened threat sensitivity. Self-esteem concerns and cognitive biases that amplify negative interpretations of social cues may also play a role. Management typically involves psychotherapy aimed at understanding and modifying relationship patterns and emotion regulation. Approaches include attachment-based therapies, cognitive-behavioral therapy, schema therapy, and mindfulness-based strategies. While the term can be useful for description and self-understanding, angstigambivalent is not a distinct clinical diagnosis and should be interpreted within the broader context of individual functioning and mental health.
