Angiotensiinogeniä

Angiotensiinogeniä, also known as angiotensinogen, is a protein precursor that plays a crucial role in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). This system is a hormonal cascade that regulates blood pressure and fluid balance within the body. Angiotensinogen is synthesized primarily in the liver and circulates in the bloodstream.

The production of angiotensinogen is influenced by various factors, including hormones like glucocorticoids and androgens, as well as inflammation. Its concentration in the blood can vary depending on these physiological states.

Once angiotensinogen is released from the liver, it acts as a substrate for the enzyme renin. Renin, secreted by the kidneys, cleaves angiotensinogen into angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is a relatively inactive decapeptide.

Subsequently, angiotensin I is converted into angiotensin II by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which is predominantly found in the lungs. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor, meaning it narrows blood vessels, thereby increasing blood pressure. It also stimulates the adrenal glands to release aldosterone, a hormone that promotes sodium and water retention, further contributing to blood pressure regulation.

Dysregulation of the RAAS and consequently angiotensinogen levels is implicated in various cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and heart failure. Therefore, understanding the role of angiotensinogen is essential for developing therapeutic strategies targeting these conditions.
