Angiospermides

Angiospermides is a proposed but not universally accepted taxonomic group within the plant kingdom. It was conceived as a division encompassing all angiosperms, commonly known as flowering plants. The term itself derives from "angiosperm," referring to plants that produce flowers and fruits. The creation of such a category would reflect the significant evolutionary divergence and biological success of angiosperms.

Historically, various classifications have attempted to organize plant life, and the concept of Angiospermides aimed to provide a distinct taxonomic rank for this monophyletic group. However, the current prevailing classification systems, such as the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) system, do not formally recognize Angiospermides as a distinct rank. Instead, they treat Angiospermae as the primary division or class within the plant kingdom.

The rationale behind proposing Angiospermides would be to highlight the unique characteristics and evolutionary history of flowering plants, separating them from other plant groups like gymnosperms, ferns, and mosses. Angiosperms are characterized by several key innovations, including the presence of flowers for reproduction, the development of fruits to protect and disperse seeds, and a highly efficient double fertilization process. These features have contributed to their dominance in terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. Despite the lack of formal recognition, the concept of Angiospermides reflects an understanding of the distinct and important position of flowering plants in the tree of life.
