The term can also encompass adjustments in formulation that affect viscosity and osmolality to optimize image quality and safety.

Safety and adverse effects: Potential reactions range from mild to severe allergic-like responses, as well as contrast-induced nephropathy in those with kidney impairment. Patient screening, premedication for high-risk individuals, adequate hydration, careful dosing, and monitoring mitigate risks. Local tissue injury from extravasation and rare metabolic effects are additional considerations.
