Andvaranaut

Andvaranaut is a magical ring that features prominently in Norse mythology, particularly in the Völsunga Saga. The ring is initially possessed by the dwarf Andvari, who hoards his treasure in a waterfall. The god Odin, accompanied by Loki, encounters Andvari and demands his gold. After a struggle, Odin takes all of Andvari's treasure, including the ring. Andvari curses the ring, stating that it will bring misfortune and death to whoever possesses it.

Loki later gives the ring to the human king Hjalprek, who in turn gives it to his son, Sigurd. Sigurd is a legendary hero in the Völsunga Saga, known for slaying the dragon Fafnir. Fafnir, in his original form, was Hjalprek's brother, who had been transformed into a dragon to guard the cursed treasure that included Andvaranaut. After Sigurd kills Fafnir, he takes the treasure and the ring.

The curse of Andvaranaut begins to manifest. Sigurd's wife, Gudrun, is tricked by her half-brother Gunnar into revealing the location of the treasure. Gunnar then murders Sigurd and takes the ring. However, the ring continues to bring suffering. Gunnar is eventually captured and, in despair, casts the ring into a river. The saga concludes with the ring continuing its cycle of misfortune. Andvaranaut embodies themes of greed, fate, and the destructive power of cursed objects within Norse lore.
