Anathapindika, whose personal name was Sudatta, was a wealthy merchant from the city of Savatthi who became one of the most prominent lay disciples of the Buddha. The name "Anathapindika" translates to "Alms-giver" or "Feeder of the Helpless," a title bestowed upon him due to his immense generosity and compassion towards the poor and needy, even before his conversion to Buddhism.
