Anadyr

Anadyr is the administrative center of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia. It sits on the left bank of the Anadyr River near its mouth at the Gulf of Anadyr, which opens into the Bering Sea. The town serves as the political, administrative, and transport hub of the okrug.

The area has long been inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Chukchi. Russian exploration reached the coast in the 17th century, and a fort at the river mouth, Anadyrsk, operated as part of early fur-trade networks. The modern settlement of Anadyr developed in the Soviet era as the administrative and logistical center of the region and became the capital of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

Anadyr has a subarctic climate, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Permafrost is widespread, and the surrounding landscape includes tundra and sparse taiga. The town is relatively remote and sparsely populated, typical of northeastern Russia.

The economy centers on administration, public services, fishing, and support for the regional economy. The locality hosts a port on the Gulf of Anadyr and an airport with regular domestic flights, making it the principal gateway to Chukotka for residents and goods.

As of the early 2020s, Anadyr has about 15,000 inhabitants. The population includes Russians and indigenous groups such as the Chukchi, with languages including Russian and Chukchi.
