Anacanthobatidae

Anacanthobatidae is a family of skates, a type of cartilaginous fish belonging to the order Rajiformes. These skates are found in deep waters, primarily in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, off the coasts of Europe and Africa. They are characterized by their broad, flattened bodies and long, whip-like tails. Unlike many other skate species, anacanthobatids possess a relatively small mouth located on the underside of their heads.

The diet of anacanthobatids consists mainly of small invertebrates, such as crustaceans and worms, which they forage for on the seabed. They are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs in leathery egg cases, often referred to as "mermaid's purses." The exact reproductive strategies and life cycles of many species within this family are not extensively studied due to their deep-sea habitat.

The family Anacanthobatidae currently comprises several genera and numerous species. Common characteristics include the absence of thorns on their dorsal surface, although some species may have small dermal denticles. Their coloration is typically drab, ranging from sandy brown to gray, providing camouflage against the seafloor. They are generally considered to be of little commercial fishing importance, though some may be caught as bycatch in deep-water trawls.
