Ammoniotely

Ammoniotely is a form of nitrogenous waste excretion where animals release ammonia as their primary waste product. Ammonia is a highly toxic compound, but it is also very soluble and requires a large amount of water to dilute and excrete. This makes ammoniotely a suitable strategy primarily for aquatic animals living in environments with abundant water.

Fish are a classic example of ammoniotele organisms. They excrete ammonia directly into the surrounding water through their gills. This process is efficient because the continuous flow of water over the gills constantly removes the ammonia, preventing its buildup in the body. Other aquatic invertebrates, such as crustaceans and aquatic insect larvae, also employ ammoniotely.

The metabolic cost of producing ammonia is relatively low, as it is a direct byproduct of protein and amino acid metabolism. However, the high water requirement for its excretion is a significant limitation. Terrestrial animals cannot effectively use ammoniotely due to the risk of dehydration. Instead, they convert ammonia into less toxic and less water-soluble compounds like urea or uric acid. This conversion requires more energy but is essential for survival on land. Therefore, ammoniotely is predominantly found in organisms with access to a plentiful water supply.
