Ammattitaudit

Ammattitaudit, in Finnish usage, refers to illnesses that are caused by work or by conditions encountered in the workplace. The term is used to describe diseases that are related to a person’s occupation, and in practice the diagnosis requires a demonstrable link between the work exposure and the illness. Ammattitaudit can develop after long-term exposure to hazardous factors or after acute incidents, and they are distinguished from illnesses that occur independently of occupation.

Common categories include respiratory diseases such as pneumoconiosis and asbestosis caused by inhalation of dust or fibers; skin diseases like occupational contact dermatitis from chemicals; noise-induced hearing loss from prolonged exposure to loud environments; musculoskeletal and tendinous disorders related to repetitive movements or heavy lifting; and certain cancers linked to workplace exposures. Other conditions may be aggravated by work, such as asthma or cardiovascular issues, when work factors contribute to their severity.

Diagnosis and recognition typically involve occupational health professionals who assess medical findings alongside a documented history of work-related exposure. In many countries, including Finland, recognized ammattitaudit may qualify for compensation or social benefits under the national system for workers’ health and safety. The process often requires medical evidence and a clear link to the documented occupational exposure.

Prevention focuses on reducing or eliminating harmful exposures through engineering controls, safe work practices, personal protective equipment, and regular health surveillance. Effective prevention also relies on risk assessment, employee training, and timely medical follow-up to manage conditions early and minimize their impact on workers' health and functioning.
