Ammattipätevyydelle refers to the recognition of professional qualifications obtained in one European Economic Area (EEA) country for the purpose of practicing a regulated profession in another EEA country. This system is designed to facilitate the free movement of workers within the EU and ensure that individuals can utilize their skills and education across different member states.

The recognition process for professional qualifications is governed by EU directives, primarily Directive 2005/36/EC. This directive establishes a framework for assessing whether a professional qualification obtained in one member state is equivalent to the qualification required in the host member state. The system distinguishes between regulated and non-regulated professions. For regulated professions, which are those where access to practice is conditional upon specific qualifications (e.g., doctors, lawyers, engineers), a formal recognition procedure is necessary.

For non-regulated professions, while there might not be a mandatory formal recognition, individuals can still seek a declaration of comparability of their foreign diplomas and certificates to assist in their job search or further studies. The competent authorities in each member state are responsible for assessing applications and determining whether the applicant's qualifications meet the required standards. This often involves verifying the duration and content of the education or training, as well as any professional experience. In some cases, if significant differences are identified, the applicant may be required to undertake an adaptation period or pass an aptitude test.
