Amides can be classified as primary (R-CO-NH2), secondary (R-CO-NHR'), or tertiary (R-CO-NR'R''), depending on the number of hydrogen atoms replaced by organic groups on the nitrogen atom.

Amide bonds are crucial in biochemistry, forming the backbone of proteins and peptides.
