Ambohidratrimo

Ambohidratrimo is a rural commune and a former royal site located in the central highlands of Madagascar, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Antananarivo. Historically, it was a significant political and administrative center, particularly during the Merina Kingdom. The name "Ambohidratrimo" translates to "the hill of the noble lords" or "the fortified hill of the nobles," reflecting its strategic importance and aristocratic heritage.

The site is characterized by its elevated position, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The most prominent feature is the royal compound, which includes ancient palaces and fortifications that stand as testament to its past grandeur. These structures are often built with stone and wood, showcasing traditional Malagasy architectural styles.
