AmJasonops

AmJasonops is a genus of small, extinct mammals that lived during the Eocene epoch, approximately 56 to 34 million years ago. The genus is known from fossil remains found in North America, particularly in the Willwood Formation of Wyoming. AmJasonops is characterized by its small size, with body lengths estimated to be around 10-15 centimeters, and its primitive dental structure, which includes a mix of both molars and premolars.

The genus includes two known species: AmJasonops harrisoni and AmJasonops minor. AmJasonops harrisoni is the larger of the two species, with a body length estimated to be around 15 centimeters. AmJasonops minor, on the other hand, is smaller, with a body length estimated to be around 10 centimeters. Both species are believed to have been insectivorous, based on their dental structure and the presence of insect remains in their fossilized stomach contents.

AmJasonops is of particular interest to paleontologists due to its primitive dental structure and its placement within the evolutionary tree of mammals. The genus is believed to be an early offshoot of the mammalian lineage, and its study has provided valuable insights into the evolution of mammalian dentition and diet.
