Alveoole

In the lungs, an alveolus is a tiny sac where gas exchange occurs. The lungs contain hundreds of millions of alveoli, forming a large surface area that facilitates the transfer of oxygen from inhaled air into the blood and the removal of carbon dioxide from the blood to be exhaled. The alveolar wall is extremely thin and is lined by two main cell types: type I pneumocytes, which provide the principal gas-exchange surface, and type II pneumocytes, which secrete surfactant to reduce surface tension and assist in repair. Alveolar air spaces contain alveolar macrophages that defend against inhaled pathogens and debris.

Gas exchange occurs across the air-blood barrier, composed of the alveolar epithelium, its basement membrane, and the capillary endothelium. Oxygen diffuses from the alveolar air into the blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses in the opposite direction. Structural features such as alveolar pores (Pores of Kohn) allow collateral ventilation between neighboring alveoli, which can help maintain ventilation if part of the lung is obstructed.

Beyond respiratory anatomy, the term alveolus also appears in dentistry and maxillofacial anatomy, where an alveolus is the socket in the jawbone that houses a tooth, together with the surrounding alveolar bone and mucosa.
