Altlastenprüfung

Altlastenprüfung refers to the process of investigating potentially contaminated sites. These sites, known as "Altlasten" in German, are areas where past industrial or commercial activities may have led to the release of hazardous substances into the soil, groundwater, or building structures. The primary goal of Altlastenprüfung is to identify the presence and extent of contamination, assess the risks posed to human health and the environment, and determine the necessity and type of remediation measures.

The investigation typically begins with a historical review of the site's land use, including examining old maps, company records, and aerial photographs to identify potential sources of contamination. This is followed by a site reconnaissance to visually assess the current condition and identify any visible signs of pollution. This can include no further action, monitoring, containment, or various remediation techniques aimed at reducing or removing the contaminants.
