Allradsysteme

Allradsysteme, also known as all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD), refer to vehicle systems that transmit power to all wheels. This contrasts with traditional two-wheel drive systems, which only power the front or rear axle. The primary benefit of all-wheel drive is enhanced traction, particularly in slippery conditions such as snow, ice, or mud, as well as on unpaved surfaces.

There are several types of all-wheel drive systems. Full-time all-wheel drive systems continuously send power to all four wheels. Part-time systems allow the driver to engage four-wheel drive manually when needed, often with a selectable transfer case. In some automatic all-wheel drive systems, power is primarily sent to one axle, and the other axle is engaged only when wheel slip is detected. Advanced electronic control units often manage power distribution in modern all-wheel drive vehicles, optimizing performance and efficiency.

All-wheel drive systems can improve vehicle handling and stability by distributing torque across all wheels, reducing the likelihood of skidding. However, they can also increase fuel consumption due to the added mechanical complexity and weight. The specific design and implementation of an all-wheel drive system vary significantly between manufacturers and vehicle models, affecting their performance characteristics and intended use, from passenger cars to heavy-duty off-road vehicles.
