Alkuainekaasut

Alkuainekaasut, also known as noble gases, are a group of chemical elements that share remarkably similar properties. These elements are characterized by their low reactivity, meaning they are unlikely to form chemical bonds with other substances under normal conditions. This inertness is due to their electron configurations, specifically having a full valence shell, which makes them very stable.

The noble gas group consists of six elements: helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe), and radon (Rn). They are found in Group 18 of the periodic table. Helium is the lightest and most abundant in the universe, while radon is the heaviest and radioactive, with its origin primarily from the radioactive decay of heavier elements.

In their elemental form, noble gases exist as monatomic gases, meaning they consist of individual atoms rather than molecules. They are colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Despite their name, some of these gases can be induced to form compounds under extreme conditions, particularly with highly electronegative elements like fluorine and oxygen. For instance, xenon can form stable xenon fluorides and oxides.

Noble gases have various practical applications. Helium is used in balloons, airships, and as a cooling agent for superconductors due to its very low boiling point. Neon is known for its use in lighting, producing a distinctive red-orange glow when an electric current passes through it. Argon is commonly employed as a protective atmosphere in welding and for filling incandescent light bulbs to prevent filament oxidation. Krypton and xenon also find use in lighting, such as in high-intensity discharge lamps, and in lasers.
