Aliedustettu

Aliedustettu is a Finnish adjective used to describe a person, group, or category that is not sufficiently represented in a given context. It is commonly applied in discussions of politics, media, education, labor markets, and survey samples to indicate representation gaps that may affect fairness, visibility, or accuracy.

Linguistically, aliedustettu is formed from the prefix ali- meaning under or beneath and the participle edustettu from edustaa, to represent. The term is used both in descriptive analyses—identifying which groups are underrepresented—and in normative discussions about the need for inclusive practices, targeted outreach, or methodological adjustments to improve balance.

In statistics and research, aliedustettu can refer to underrepresentation in samples or to response rates that skew results. In public discourse, it describes groups whose share of attention or power is lower than their share of the population, such as certain demographic, social, or cultural groups. The concept is often contrasted with overrepresentation, expressed as yliedustettu.
