Algkäivitus, also known as cold start, refers to the initial phase of a system or process where it begins operation from a completely inactive state. This is in contrast to a warm start, where a system resumes from a partially active or suspended state. Algkäivitus often involves a more extensive sequence of operations to bring all components to a functional level. For example, in computing, an algkäivitus of a computer involves the Power-On Self-Test (POST) to check hardware, followed by loading the operating system from storage. In other contexts, it might mean an engine starting from a cold temperature, requiring more fuel or a longer warm-up period. The term emphasizes the necessity of establishing a baseline operational state before the system can perform its intended functions.
