Alfaspårdetektorer

Alfaspårdetektorer, also known as alpha track detectors or CR-39 detectors, are passive devices used to detect alpha particles. They are made from a transparent plastic material, most commonly polyallyl diglycol carbonate (CR-39). When an alpha particle passes through the detector material, it creates a latent damage track. This track is invisible to the naked eye but can be revealed and observed by etching the plastic with a chemical solution, typically a hot concentrated alkali. The etching process enlarges the damage tracks, making them visible under a microscope.

The size and shape of the etched tracks depend on the energy and angle of incidence of the alpha particle, as well as the etching parameters. This allows for some characterization of the alpha radiation. Alfaspårdetektorer are widely used in various applications due to their simplicity, low cost, and ability to operate without power. They are employed in environmental monitoring for radon detection, in nuclear safety for monitoring radioactive contamination, and in scientific research for studying alpha emitters and nuclear reactions. Their passive nature means they can be deployed for extended periods to accumulate dose information, making them suitable for retrospective dosimetry. The sensitivity and detection efficiency can be influenced by factors such as the material's purity, the etching process, and the environmental conditions during exposure.
