Etymology: The name Alerin is derived from early coastal dialects, possibly meaning “shore of merchants” or “place of gates,” with local memory of its harbor as a gateway between inland markets and seaborne trade.

Geography: Located on the sheltered Bay of Tav, Alerin occupies a low-lying coast with adjacent marshlands and a hill to the east. The climate is temperate with dry summers and regular maritime breezes.

History: Alerin emerged in the 12th century as an alliance of merchant guilds. It grew through trade, navigational innovations, and periodic alliances with neighboring polities, achieving de facto independence by the 13th century and developing a distinctive urban culture.
