Alectra

Alectra Utilities Corporation, doing business as Alectra, is a Canadian electricity distribution company based in Ontario. It is among the largest municipally owned electricity distributors in Canada, delivering power to residential, commercial and industrial customers in portions of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

Formation and ownership: Alectra was created in 2017 through the merger of four preexisting utilities: Enersource (Mississauga), Brampton Hydro (Brampton), PowerStream (serving parts of the northern Greater Toronto Area), and Horizon Utilities (Hamilton). The merger consolidated ownership under the four municipal bodies that previously owned the utilities. The company operates under the oversight of the Ontario Energy Board and the municipal governments.

Operations: Alectra owns and maintains its distribution network, providing delivery of electricity, customer service, outage restoration, metering, and related services. It serves more than a million customers across multiple municipalities in Ontario. The name Alectra was chosen as the brand for the new utility, representing the integrated service approach of the merged entities.
