Albuerne

Albuerne is the term used in Norwegian and Danish for the elbows, the joints that connect the upper arm to the forearm. In English, the equivalent term is elbows. The albuerne enable bending and straightening of the arm and also permit rotation of the forearm.

Anatomy: The elbow joint comprises three bones: the humerus of the upper arm and the two forearm bones, the radius and ulna. The main hinge joint is the humeroulnar joint, with the humeroradial joint assisting flexion and rotation, and the proximal radioulnar joint enabling pronation and supination. The joint is enclosed by a capsule and supported by ligaments (ulnar collateral, radial collateral, and annular ligaments).

Muscles such as the biceps brachii and brachialis on the front of the arm, and the triceps at the back, act across the elbow to produce movement. Tendons attach these muscles to the bones, and the synovial membrane lines the joint capsule.

Clinical significance: The elbow is a common site of injuries related to sports and falls, including lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow), olecranon bursitis, radial head fractures, olecranon fractures, and elbow dislocations. Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis and inflammatory diseases can affect the albuerne.

Diagnosis and treatment: Assessment combines physical examination with imaging such as X-ray or MRI. Management starts with rest, ice, compression, elevation, and physical therapy; NSAIDs for pain; and injections or surgical intervention for complex fractures, chronic instability, or severe tendinopathy.

In children, growth plates around the elbow require careful assessment, as injuries can affect development. Understanding the albuerne's anatomy aids in diagnosis, rehabilitation, and prevention of recurrent injury.
