Alarm panels, also known as control panels or main units, are the central component of most security alarm systems. They act as the brain of the system, receiving signals from various sensors, processing this information, and then initiating an appropriate response. This response can include sounding an audible siren, sending alerts to a monitoring station, or notifying the system owner directly via a mobile app.

The core function of an alarm panel is to monitor the status of connected devices. These devices can include door and window contact sensors, motion detectors, glass break sensors, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors. When a sensor is triggered, it sends a signal to the alarm panel. The panel then interprets this signal based on its programming and the current system status (e.g., armed or disarmed).

Modern alarm panels often offer a range of features. Many are capable of wireless communication, allowing for easier installation and integration with other smart home devices. They can be controlled remotely through smartphone applications, enabling users to arm or disarm the system, check sensor status, and receive alerts from anywhere. Some advanced panels also include built-in cameras or the ability to connect to external cameras for visual verification of events. The power source for alarm panels is typically mains electricity, but they are equipped with a backup battery to ensure continuous operation during power outages.
