Alaptermék

Alaptermék is a Hungarian term used in product management and marketing to denote the core product around which a company's product line is built. It represents the primary value proposition and the most essential version of a product that satisfies the central customer need. An alaptermék typically forms the anchor for pricing, branding, and distribution, and serves as the reference point for developing variants and extensions.

In practice, the alaptermék is the standard version with a defined set of features, performance, and packaging. From it, companies develop line extensions, upgrades, color options, add-ons, or bundled offers. The strategy aims to maximize economies of scale and simplify portfolio management by keeping the alaptermék stable while expanding through variants rather than creating entirely separate cores.

Examples: in consumer electronics, the base smartphone model with a fixed storage and processor configuration can be the alaptermék; variants include higher storage, different colors, or accessories. In the food industry, plain yogurt can be the alaptermék, with flavored versions, low-fat or probiotic variants arising as extensions.
