The term is commonly used in German-speaking countries and describes units that may function as part of the emergency department or as separate inpatient wards within the hospital's acute care pathway. The central goal is rapid, coordinated care to prevent deterioration and determine the next steps in treatment.

Core functions include triage or rapid assessment of patients presenting with chest pain, stroke symptoms, trauma, sepsis, or other acute conditions; resuscitation and stabilization; and initial diagnostic workups using laboratory tests, imaging, and bedside monitoring. Depending on patient status and local organization, individuals may be discharged after stabilization, transferred to a specialty ward, or admitted to an intensive or step-down unit for further care.

Staffing typically comprises emergency physicians or hospitalists, specialized nurses, and support personnel, with ready access to imaging, laboratory services, pharmacy, and specialty consultations (such as surgery, internal medicine, neurology, and radiology). Many Akutstationen employ standardized protocols, rapid-triage pathways, and observation units to optimize throughput and patient safety.
