Aktiivmudakogust

Aktiivmudakogust, meaning active sludge in Estonian, refers to a biological wastewater treatment process. This system utilizes a microbial community, primarily bacteria, to break down organic pollutants present in wastewater. The process involves aerating the wastewater in a tank, which promotes the growth and activity of the aerobic microorganisms. These microorganisms consume the dissolved and suspended organic matter, converting it into new biomass (sludge) and simpler inorganic compounds.

The active sludge, a flocculent mixture of microorganisms and organic matter, is then separated from the treated water. A portion of this settled sludge is returned to the aeration tank to maintain a sufficient concentration of active biomass for continuous treatment. The excess sludge is removed and further processed, often through dewatering and disposal or potential reuse.

Aktiivmudakogust is a widely adopted secondary treatment stage in many municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to achieve high levels of organic removal. The efficiency of the process depends on factors such as the composition of the wastewater, temperature, oxygen levels, and the overall health and quantity of the microbial population. Regular monitoring and control are crucial to ensure optimal performance and effluent quality.
