Ajavahemikke

Ajavahemikke is a term used to describe discrete time intervals used for planning, analysis, and scheduling in time-domain systems. It denotes a bounded span of time defined by a start instant and a duration, within which events can be triggered, data collected, or computations performed. The concept is widely used in Estonian-language technical literature and in cross-language discussions of time segmentation.

Originating from Estonian aeg meaning time and vahemik meaning interval, ajavahemikke is the plural form used when referring to multiple such intervals in textual discussions.

In computing, ajavahemikke commonly appear in real-time scheduling (time-triggered architectures), where processor time is divided into consecutive ajavahemikke or used to allocate sensor sampling windows. In data analysis, they serve as basic units for windowing operations, aggregations, and moving calculations. In communications, time-division multiplexing uses ajavahemikke as time-slots.

Characteristics include a defined start time and duration, non-overlapping constraints in certain contexts, alignment to a clock or frame, and the ability to be uniform (equal length) or variable (different lengths). Endpoints may be inclusive or exclusive, depending on the convention used.

For example, in a cyclic scheduler, the system may use five ajavahemikke of 10 milliseconds each within a 50 ms cycle to allocate CPU time to five tasks. A network monitor might partition a 1-second observation window into 100 ajavahemikke for per-slot statistics.
