Aizome

Aizome is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that uses indigo dye derived from the leaves of the indigo plant, *Persicaria tinctoria*. The process involves fermenting the indigo plant material to create a vat of dye. This vat is typically alkaline and contains a reducing agent that converts the indigo pigment into a soluble form that can bind to fabric.

The characteristic color of aizome is a rich, deep blue, but the depth of the color can be varied by repeating the dyeing process. Lighter shades are achieved with fewer dips, while darker shades require multiple immersions. The dyeing process itself is quite labor-intensive and requires careful control of the dye bath's temperature and pH.

Fabrics dyed with aizome are known for their unique aesthetic qualities, including subtle variations in color and a characteristic texture. Historically, aizome was used for dyeing various textiles, including kimonos, work clothes, and household items. Today, it remains a respected craft in Japan, practiced by artisans who continue the tradition of indigo dyeing.
