Aivoselkäydinnesteenä, often referred to as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in English, is a clear, colorless fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It is produced by specialized cells called ependymal cells within the ventricles of the brain. CSF acts as a protective cushion for the central nervous system, absorbing shock and preventing damage from sudden movements.

This fluid plays a crucial role in maintaining the proper chemical environment for neuronal function. It helps to remove metabolic waste products from the brain and spinal cord, thus preventing the buildup of toxins that could impair neurological processes. CSF also circulates nutrients and oxygen to the central nervous system.

The analysis of CSF is a vital diagnostic tool in medicine. By collecting a sample of CSF through a lumbar puncture (spinal tap), doctors can detect the presence of infections, inflammation, bleeding, or abnormal cell growth within the brain and spinal cord. Abnormalities in CSF composition, such as increased white blood cell count or the presence of certain proteins, can indicate conditions like meningitis, encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, or certain types of cancer.

The volume of CSF in an adult human is typically around 100-160 milliliters. It is constantly being produced and reabsorbed, with a turnover rate of about three to four times per day. The pressure and flow of CSF are tightly regulated to ensure optimal function and protection of the central nervous system.
