Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is a major city in western India, the largest in the state of Gujarat by population, situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River. It serves as a commercial and cultural hub with a long history as a trading center and a diverse architectural heritage.

Founded in 1411 by Ahmed Shah I of the Gujarat Sultanate, Ahmedabad was the capital of the sultanate for several centuries and grew into a major textile and trading city under subsequent rulers. The city played a prominent role during the Indian independence movement, and the Sabarmati Ashram, which housed Mahatma Gandhi from 1917 to 1930, is a key historical site.

Ahmedabad’s historic center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated for its well-preserved urban fabric and monuments from medieval and early modern periods. Notable landmarks include the Sabarmati Ashram, the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque with its distinctive lattice windows, the nearby Adalaj Stepwell, Jama Masjid, Bhadra Fort in the old city, and the Calico Textile Museum. The city also features attractions such as Kankaria Lake and a vibrant traditional and crafts scene, including Law Garden markets.

Economy and education: Ahmedabad is a major center for textiles, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. It hosts premier institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) and the National Institute of Design (NID). The Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, the world’s largest cricket stadium by capacity, is a notable landmark on the city’s outskirts.

Transport: The city is served by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and functions as a major rail and road hub. An urban Metro project is under development to improve local transit.
