Afskæringskontrasten

Afskæringskontrasten, a Danish term, translates to "cut-off contrast" and refers to a visual phenomenon observed in certain optical instruments, particularly telescopes and microscopes. It describes the reduction in image contrast that occurs when the aperture of the objective lens or mirror is artificially limited, or "cut off." This limitation can be caused by the physical size of the aperture stop, vignetting, or by the design of the instrument itself.

When the aperture is restricted, less light from the object reaches the eyepiece. More importantly, it can also affect the way light rays are collected and focused. Rays passing through the outer edges of the objective lens or mirror are often responsible for contributing to the finest details and the overall contrast of the image. By cutting off these rays, the ability of the instrument to resolve fine details and distinguish between areas of slightly different brightness is diminished.

The effect is most noticeable in situations where high contrast is desirable, such as observing faint celestial objects or fine cellular structures. A reduced aperture can lead to a "washed out" or less defined image, making it harder to discern subtle features. While stopping down an aperture can sometimes increase depth of field in photography, in optical instruments designed for resolution and contrast, it generally has a detrimental effect.
