Afg1p
Afg1p is a mitochondrial protein in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, encoded by the AFG1 gene. It is a member of the AAA+ (ATPases Associated with diverse cellular Activities) superfamily and is implicated in mitochondrial protein quality control. Afg1p is predicted to be targeted to mitochondria by an N-terminal presequence and is associated with the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it may function together with other mitochondrial proteases.
Functionally, Afg1p is thought to act as an ATP-dependent chaperone or protease component that remodels or
Genetic disruption of AFG1 can lead to respiratory defects, especially on non-fermentable carbon sources, and may
Afg1p has orthologs in a range of organisms, indicating conservation of this protein family beyond yeast. In
