Aesons refer to a group of mythological figures in Greek mythology, primarily associated with the legend of Jason and the Argonauts. The term "Aeson" itself is the name of Jason’s father, who was the king of Iolcus in Thessaly. The broader use of the term "Aesons" often extends to include Jason’s descendants or those connected to his lineage, particularly in later mythological traditions.

In the most well-known version of the story, Jason’s half-brother Pelias usurped the throne of Iolcus, forcing Jason into exile. To reclaim his birthright, Jason embarked on the quest for the Golden Fleece, assembling a crew of heroes known as the Argonauts. His father, Aeson, had been imprisoned by Pelias, and Jason’s mission was partly motivated by the desire to restore his father to the throne.

The term "Aesons" occasionally appears in later mythological and literary references, sometimes used to denote a broader lineage or collective identity tied to Jason’s descendants. However, the usage is not as consistent as in the case of Jason’s immediate family. Some interpretations suggest that the term may have been applied loosely to emphasize the continuity of rule or legacy within the royal line of Iolcus.

While Aeson himself is a relatively minor figure in Greek mythology compared to his son Jason, his role in the founding of Jason’s legacy is significant. His imprisonment and eventual restoration highlight themes of betrayal, exile, and the quest for justice that permeate the broader mythological narrative. The term "Aesons" remains a niche reference, primarily encountered in scholarly discussions or specialized mythological contexts.
