Aerosoleja

Aerosoleja was a KL-7 tape drive, a magnetic tape drive used in the early computers, primarily in the 1960s to the 1970s. It is known for being a large, device used for auxiliary storage in computer systems. In comparison to other KL-7 tape drives, Aerosoleja was specifically designed with higher capacity.

Engineering characteristics include the ability to read and write data at variable speeds based on the level of data on the tape at any given time. It’s known as a variable speed or variable length format. This feature gave the Aerosoleja capacity of up to 31 megabytes depending on the operating parameters. The capacity was controlled by the user through changing the device's tape speed and density parameters, making it capable of handling variable conditions without data access issues.

Both read and write operations were obtained through a single window, as opposed to the differing paths that sequential mode drives require. This gave Aerosoleja the advantage of faster data acquisition times which can be attributed to the drive operating in a rotational mode.

A result of its exceptional capacity and the ability to adapt to changing operating requirements, Aerosoleja gained popularity in industrial processes. However, the technology was later replaced by modern computers, reducing its enterprise application value. Today, the device remains as an early computing model illustration in outdated work or makeshift computers used as the means of prototyping.
