Aelle

Aelle, also known as Ella, was a king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. Historical records place his reign during the late 9th century, a period marked by Viking invasions and significant political upheaval in England. He is primarily remembered for his role in the defense of Northumbria against the Great Heathen Army, a large Viking force that had conquered much of eastern England.

Sources suggest Aelle may have ruled as a sub-king or a more independent ruler within Northumbria. His reign is often associated with the capture and execution of Ivar the Boneless, a prominent Viking leader. According to tradition, Aelle was subjected to the brutal "blood eagle" ritual by Ivar's men in revenge for the death of Ivar's father, Ragnar Lothbrok. Aelle's reign was ultimately short-lived. Northumbria fell under Danish control during this era, and the kingdom's independent rulers were largely supplanted by Viking Jarls.
