The Aedui were a Celtic people who inhabited central Gaul during the late Iron Age and into the early Roman period. Their territory covered parts of the Saône valley and the surrounding uplands in what is now Burgundy, with the major oppidum of Bibracte on Mont Beuvray identified as a political and ceremonial center. They spoke Gaulish and formed one of the most influential Gallic confederations before and during the early stages of Roman contact.
