Adverbiderivaatioon

Adverbiderivaatioon is a linguistic term used to describe the derivation of adverbs in Finnish, particularly adverbs of manner formed from adjectives. In ordinary Finnish, the most productive path to create adverbs is by adding the suffix -sti to the stem of an adjective, producing forms that describe how an action is performed.

The typical pattern is straightforward: take an adjective and attach -sti. Examples include nopea (fast) becoming nopeasti (quickly), kaunis (beautiful) becoming kauniisti (beautifully), and hidas (slow) becoming hitaasti (slowly). The process often involves small phonological adjustments to preserve smooth pronunciation, such as vowel changes or consonant handling at word boundaries.

There are notable exceptions and variations. Some adjectives yield adverbs with slightly different suffixes, such as tavallinen (ordinary) producing tavallisesti (ordinarily). Not all adverbs come from adjectives; common irregular adverbs exist, and semantic categories like well or soon may have independent adverbs such as hyvin (well) and pian (soon). Additionally, adjectives ending in certain suffixes (for example, -llinen) can form adverbs with forms like -llisesti, as in tavallinen → tavallisesti, illustrating a broader productive pattern beyond -sti.

In use, adverbs formed with -sti and related patterns modify verbs and, less commonly, adjectives to convey manner or degree of the action. The adverb derivation system is a characteristic feature of Finnish morphology, contributing to the language’s rich array of adverbial expressions and its overall typological profile among Finnic languages.
