Adresstabellen

Adresstabellen are fundamental data structures used in computer networking, particularly in routers and switches, to store information about network addresses and their corresponding physical locations or next-hop destinations. They are essential for directing data packets efficiently across networks.

The most common type of adresstabel is the forwarding table, often referred to as a MAC address table in Ethernet networks or a routing table in IP networks. A MAC address table maps Media Access Control (MAC) addresses of devices on a local network segment to the switch port on which they are located. When a switch receives a frame, it examines the destination MAC address and consults its MAC address table. If a match is found, the frame is forwarded only to the specific port associated with that MAC address, reducing unnecessary traffic. If the MAC address is not in the table, the switch floods the frame to all ports except the one it arrived on.

Routing tables, on the other hand, are used by routers to make decisions about where to forward IP packets. They contain entries that map network prefixes (like IP address ranges) to the next-hop router or outgoing interface that should be used to reach that network. Routers use routing protocols (such as OSPF or BGP) to exchange routing information and build their routing tables dynamically. When a router receives an IP packet, it looks for the longest matching network prefix in its routing table to determine the best path for forwarding the packet. This process of lookup and forwarding is crucial for inter-network communication. Adresstabellen are dynamic, meaning their contents are updated as network topology changes or new devices join the network.
