Adjektiivijohdos refers to the process of forming adjectives from other word types in Finnish grammar. This derivational method is a common feature of Finnish morphology, allowing for the creation of new adjectives through affixation or other structural modifications.

In Finnish, adjectives can be derived from nouns, verbs, and even other adjectives. The most frequently used suffixes for forming adjectives include *-inen*, *-inen* (with varying vowel harmony), *-inen* (as in *kirjallinen* from *kirja*), *-inen* (as in *kylmä* from *kylmä*), and *-inen* (as in *tietoinen* from *tieto*). For example, the noun *vesi* (water) can become the adjective *vesinen* (watery), while *tieto* (knowledge) transforms into *tietoinen* (knowledgeable).

Verbs can also serve as the base for adjective derivation. For instance, the verb *syödä* (to eat) yields the adjective *syömä* (eating, as in *syömäkala* – eating fish), though this form is often used in compound words. Another example is *puhua* (to speak), which forms *puhuva* (speaking), as seen in *puhuva ääni* (speaking voice).

Adjektiivijohdos often involves changes in word class and sometimes in meaning as well. The derived adjective may retain a close semantic connection to the original word but can also develop new nuances. For example, *kivi* (stone) becomes *kivinen* (stony), while *kivi* can also imply hardness or durability in certain contexts.
