Adimensionalizing

Adimensionalizing, also known as nondimensionalization or normalization, is a mathematical technique used to simplify complex equations by removing dimensions and units. This process is particularly useful in physics, engineering, and other scientific disciplines where equations often involve multiple variables with different units. By converting dimensional quantities into dimensionless quantities, adimensionalizing helps to identify the most important parameters and to compare results from different systems.

The process of adimensionalizing typically involves identifying a set of characteristic scales for each variable in the equation. These scales are then used to create dimensionless variables by dividing the original variables by their respective scales. For example, if a variable represents a length, the characteristic scale might be a reference length, and the dimensionless variable would be the ratio of the actual length to the reference length.

It can also simplify numerical simulations by reducing the number of parameters that need to be varied. Additionally, dimensionless groups, such as Reynolds number and Mach number, are often used to characterize flow phenomena and other physical processes.
