Adessiiveilla

Adessiiveilla is the plural form of the Finnish adessive case, which marks location on a surface or at a place. In English, it roughly corresponds to on or at. The plural form is created by adding the suffix -illa/-illä to the plural stem of a noun. For example, pöydät (tables) become pöydillä (on the tables); hyllyt (shelves) become hyllyillä (on the shelves); kirjat (books) become kirjoilla (on the books).

Usage examples include: Kirjat ovat pöydillä, meaning the books are on the tables; Lasit ovat hyllyillä, meaning the glasses are on the shelves; Kengät ovat lattioilla, meaning the shoes are on the floors. The adessive plural is commonly used with both inanimate and animate nouns when describing the location of objects or people in a plural context, especially in everyday descriptions and inventories.

Compared with other locative cases, adessiiviilla specifically conveys surface-level location and is distinct from the singular adessive pöydällä or inessive sisällä, which indicate singular location or interior space. The form agrees with the noun in number (plural) and typically does not carry additional possessive markings. It is one of several postpositional cases in Finnish that attach to the noun to express spatial relationships without separate prepositions.
